Text: Luke 6: 24-26

SOLEMN PRONOUNCEMENT OF WOE

1. “But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.” Luke 6:24

a. The “woe” is not on those who have wealth.
i. The problem is that the rich have rejected the salvation of God.
ii. They had chosen wealth rather than to respond to the Lord’s word.
b. Their wealth had given them “consolation”.
i. The physical material comfort was preferred.
ii. But this “consolation” was at best temporary.
iii. The eternal value that comes with the Gospel was missing.

2. “Woe to you who are full, for you shall hunger.” Luke 6:25a

a. The “woe” is not on those who have plenty to eat.
b. They may eat today, but what if they were to hunger tomorrow.
c. There were those who lived for “today,” but have no thought for tomorrow.
d. These were not able to see the significance of the eternal salvation offered.

3. “Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.” Luke 6:25b

a. The “woe” is not on those who are able to enjoy laughter.
b. The source of their laughter is of the flesh and worldly.
c. Where the source of joy is not in the Lord, the laughter today, will turn into mourning and weeping when life changes and becomes hard.

4. “Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for so did their fathers to the false prophets.” Luke 6:26

a. The “woe” is not in receiving compliments,
b. The problem is who the “complimentors” are.
c. The Lord compared them to those who complimented the false prophets.
i. They were flatterers and not sincere.
ii. They were spiritually blind and sinful.
iii. Their compliments had no worth at all.
iv. To receive compliments from such people would be truly “woe”.

iii.

iii.
