Text: Luke 5: 27-29

THE MINISTRY OF THE LORD JESUS

1. The ministry of the Lord Jesus must have surprised many, if not all

a. By His teachings.

b. By His deeds.

c. They were vastly different:

i. From the scribes and Pharisees.

ii. From the traditional views and practices.

2. Everything about the Lord Jesus was

a. Refreshingly uplifting to the heart and soul.

b. Really extraordinary.

THE GATHERING OF A BAND OF DISCIPLES

1. The Lord Jesus did not gather

a. Priests

b. Scribes

c. Pharisees

2. He gathered humble people

a. Ordinary people.

b. Four of them, at least, were fishermen.

c. This assortment of Disciples:

i. Different from the standard theological schools in the country.

ii. Difficult to imagine how they would turn out.

3. A very unusual Invitation issued

a. The Lord called Levi, a tax collector (Matthew).

b. He invited Matthew to follow Him (Luke 5:27).

4. Tax collectors

a. They were despised by many.

b. They were regarded as “wicked”.

c. Many took advantage of their positions.

i. They collected taxes on behalf of Rome.

ii. They were known to be quite dishonest people.

d. Yet, the Lord Jesus called Levi Matthew to follow Him.

IMMEDIATE RESPONSE OF MATTHEW

1. He gave a farewell feast

2. He invited many fellow-tax collectors to his farewell feast (Luke 5:29)

a. He was saying farewell to his friends.

b. He was concluding a chapter of his life as a tax collector.

c. He had found faith in the Lord Jesus.

d. He was going to follow the Lord as one of His disciples.

d. 但是主耶稣却请利未马太跟从祂

马太立刻的回应

1. 他摆了一个筵席

2. 他请了许多税史来参加他的告别宴《路加福音 5：29》

a. 他在和朋友告别

b. 他结束他做税史的一个阶段

c. 他在主耶稣里找到了信心

d. 他将跟从主耶稣，成为祂门徒之一
