Text: Luke 4: 31-37

IN CAPERNAUM

1. Capernaum simply means “Nahum’s Village”.

2. It was not a very large town at all. The main industry in this village was fishing.

3. He taught there on many Sabbaths (Luke 4:31).

AT THE SYNAGOGUE IN CAPERNAUM

1. He was teaching in the local synagogue.

2. The worshippers

a. They were “astonished”.

b. His teaching of the word of God was authoritative (Luke 4:32).

A DEMON-POSSESSED MAN AT THE SYNAGOGUE

1. A man who was demon-possessed cried out.

a. “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?”

b. “Did You come to destroy us?”

c. “I know who You are- The Holy One of God!” (Luke 4:34)

2. The demon who dwelt in the man, spoke out

a. The demon recognised the Lord Jesus.

i. He was indeed “Jesus of Nazareth”.

ii. But He was also “The Holy One of God”.

b. He recognized that the Lord Jesus had the power to destroy all demons.

i. This demon confronted the Lord Jesus.

ii. He did not try and tempt the Lord in any way.

What would the Lord Jesus Christ do?

THE AUTHORITY AND POWER OF THE LORD JESUS

1. The Lord Jesus rebuked the demon (Luke 4:35a)

a. “Be quiet” Luke 4:35b

i. He was disturbing the teaching of the Lord Jesus.

ii. He was obviously disruptive.

iii. He might have caused some to be fearful.

iv. The first command was to be silent.

b. “And come out of him” Luke 4:35c

i. This was a direct command.

ii. How would the demon respond?

iii. He had no choice but to obey the Lord instantly.

c. The demon was defeated.

i. With wickedness he threw the man into the midst of the people.

ii. He intended to hurt him but failed to do so (Luke 4:35d).

THE AMAZEMENT OF THE CONGREGATION

1. All who saw this event were amazed (Luke 4:36)

2. They spoke among themselves.

a. “What a word this is!”

b. “For with authority and power He commands the evil spirits, and they come out.” (Luke 4:36)

SPREADING THE NEWS

1. They could not help but spread what they had just seen

a. Jesus of Nazareth taught the Scriptures with authority.

b. The Lord Jesus also had power over demons.

2. Surrounding regions

a. This report had a vast circulation.

b. The authority and power of the Lord Jesus was truly “astonishing”

主耶稣基督会怎么做？

主耶稣的权柄和能力

1. 主耶稣责备污鬼《路加福音 4:35a》

a. “不要作声”《路加福音 4:35b》

i. 他扰乱了主耶稣的教导

ii. 他显然破坏宁静

iii. 他可能使一些人感到害怕

iv. 第一个命令是保持沉默

b. “从这人身上出来吧”《路加福音 4:35c》

i. 这是一个直接的命令

ii. 污鬼会如何反应？

iii. 他别无选择，只能立即服从主

c. 污鬼被打败了
