JUDEA AND GALILEE

1. After King Herod dies, his kingdom was divided among his sons.

2. But Judea was ruled by a Roman Governor.

3. Galilee was ruled by King Herod Antipas.

a. He had jailed John the Baptiser.
b. He had also ordered John’s execution.

THE LORD JESUS WAS SENT TO SEE KING HEROD ANTIPAS

“When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean. And as soon as he knew that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.”

Luke 23:6-7

1. Technically, the Roman Governor could have been the presiding judge.

a. Rome ruled Palestine.
b. A case brought before him in Jerusalem was under his jurisdiction.

2. He had learned that the Lord Jesus was from Galilee.

3. He also knew that Herod Antipas was in Jerusalem at that time.

4. He did not want to be the judge because he knew that the Council was trying to use his authority to condemn the Lord Jesus Christ.

5. He had found no fault in the Lord Jesus at all! But the Council had insisted that he should find the Lord Jesus guilty and worthy of being given capital punishment!

THE LORD JESUS BEFORE KING HEROD ANTIPAS

“Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him. Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him nothing.”

Luke 23:8-9

1. Herod Antipas was very glad to see the Lord Jesus.

2. He had heard so much about Him.

3. He had hoped that the Lord Jesus might even entertain him by performing a miracle or two.

4. He asked many questions of the Lord Jesus.

5. The strangest thing happened.
The Lord Jesus said nothing to Herod Antipas.

a. This trial before Herod was a spurious one.
b. The king was not concerned about the case that was brought against the Lord Jesus.
