ANSWERING A QUESTION WITH A QUESTION

1. Is it valid to answer a question with a question?

2. The Lord Jesus raised a pertinent question to the religious leaders who challenged His authority.

3. This approach is acceptable!

THE QUESTION THE LORD JESUS RAISED UP

“But He answered and said to them, ‘I also will ask you one thing, and answer Me: The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men?’”

Luke 20:3-4

1. He raised up a valid question.

2. The question revolved around the authority of John the Baptiser.

a. Was John’s authority from heaven? That is, from God!

b. Was John’s authority from men?
Who authorised John to preach and to baptise?

THE ANSWER OF THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS

“And they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.’ So they answered that they did not know where it was from. And Jesus said to them, ‘Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.’”

Luke 20:5-8

1. The religious leaders reasoned among themselves.

a. If they answered that John’s authority was from heaven.
They knew that the Lord Jesus would ask why they had not believed in John, since his authority came from God.

b. If they said that John’s authority came from men.
They might be stoned by the people, for they saw John as a prophet of God!

2. They replied that they did not know!

a. They refused to give an answer.

b. They refused to commit themselves with an answer.

3. The Response of the Lord Jesus.

a. He too can refuse to give an answer.

b. The religious leaders knew that His authority came from God.

c. But they refused to acknowledge the authority of God given to the Lord Jesus!

a. 他们拒绝回答

b. 他们拒绝付一个回答

3. 主耶稣的回应

a. 祂也可以拒绝回答

b. 宗教领袖知道祂的权柄来自上帝

c. 但他们拒绝承认上帝赐给主耶稣的权柄！
