Text: Luke 19: 45-48

THE TEMPLE OF JERUSALEM

1. Physically and structurally, it was a very beautiful Temple.

2. King Herod devoted much time and spared no expense to make it an outstanding religious building.

3. But spiritually, the Temple was at a very low ebb!

THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY

1. This symbolised His authority as One who came in the name of the LORD (Luke 19:38).

2. The song that was sung to the Lord Jesus described Him as “the King”.

CLEANSING OF THE TEMPLE

“Then He went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in it, saying to them, ‘It is written, ‘My house is a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’’”

Luke 19:46

1. The Lord Jesus drove out the following:

a. Those who bought and sold in the Temple grounds.
b. They were making huge profits from the pilgrims who had come to worship the Lord in the Temple.
c. Those who were poor would be the hardest hit by these merchants.

2. The Temple

a. It was designed as a place of prayer (Isaiah 56:7).
b. But it had become a den of thieves (Jeremiah 7:11).
c. This was a very strong rebuke from the Lord Jesus.
d. He had every right to cleanse the Temple.

THE ORIGINAL USE OF THE TEMPLE

“And He was teaching daily in the temple. But the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him, and were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to hear Him.”

Luke 19:47-48

1. Teaching at the Temple.

a. This was an original use of the Temple.
b. It was meant to be a place where worshippers may be taught the Scriptures.
c. The Lord Jesus did just that.

2. The anger of the religious leaders.

a. The chief priests
b. The scribes
c. The leaders of the people

These were angry with what the Lord Jesus was doing.

3. The worshippers

a. They came to the Lord Jesus to hear Him teach.
b. They were very attentive to the teaching of the Lord Jesus.
c. Their presence at the Temple prevented the religious leaders from any attempt to harm the Lord Jesus Christ.
