Text: Luke 19: 1-6

REACHING OUT TO PEOPLE

1. The Lord Jesus reached out to people all the time.

2. He was conscious of His ministry (Luke 4:18-19).

a. To preach the gospel to the poor.
b. To heal the broken-hearted.
c. To proclaim liberty to the captives.
d. To help the blind to recover their sight.
e. To set free those who are oppressed.
f. To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.

A WONDERFUL STORY OF SALVATION

“Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way.”

Luke 19:1-4

THE CITY OF JERICHO

1. This city was about 24 km from Jerusalem.

2. This was an important and rich city

3. The Lord Jesus had already informed His disciples about His suffering and death (Luke 18:31-34).

4. He was heading towards Jerusalem determinedly.

ZACCHAEUS THE TAX COLLECTOR

1. He was a chief tax collector.

a. He was probably a very senior tax-collector.
b. He had acquired great wealth along the way.

2. For some reason, he wanted to see the Lord Jesus.

3. He was described as being short in stature.

4. He decided that he would climb up a sycamore tree.

a. This is a species of the fig tree family.
b. The fig-sycamore tree had been cultivated for a long time in Israel.
c. He figured he would be able to catch a glimpse of the Saviour when he passed that way.

TO THE GREAT SURPRISE OF ZACCHAEUS

“And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, ‘Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.’ So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully.”

Luke 19:5-6

1. The Lord Jesus spotted Zacchaeus up in the sycamore tree.

2. He then invited Himself to his (Zacchaeus’ house)!

3. This was a great surprise to the chief tax collector.

a. It was a surprise of great joy.
b. He came down hastily from the sycamore tree.
c. He received the Lord Jesus joyfully!

耶利哥城市

1. 这城市离耶路撒冷有24公里

2. 这是个重要和富裕的城市

3. 主耶稣已经向门徒们提到自己受苦受难的事《路加福音 18:31-34》

做税吏长的撒该

1. 他是税吏长

a. 他应该是个资深的税吏

b. 他收取了财富

4. 他因此决定爬上桑树
