Text: Luke 18: 24-27

ENTERING THE KINGDOM OF GOD

1. How well do we value entering into the kingdom of God?

a. Many would like to enter into the kingdom of God.
b. But few actually fully appreciate God’s kingdom.

2. The story of the Rich Ruler is an important illustration.

a. The Rich Ruler loves his wealth on earth far more than the kingdom of God!
b. He was not prepared to give up his wealth to help the poor, as an expression of faith in the Lord and His kingdom.

AN IMPORTANT REMARK BY THE LORD JESUS

“And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said, ‘How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.’”

Luke 18:24-25

1. Sorrow was felt by the Rich Ruler.

a. Sorrow that he could not heed what the Lord Jesus had said to him.
b. Sorrow because he knew that he was not part of the kingdom of God.

2. The comment of the Lord Jesus:

a. It was hard for the wealthy to enter the kingdom of God.
b. We are reminded of what the Lord taught about Mammon.

“You cannot serve God and mammon.”

Luke 16:13

3. A strong figure of speech.

a. Can a camel go through and eye of a needle?
No!
b. Can a rich man enter the kingdom of God?
Not if he is serving mammon!

A REJOINDER FROM THE CROWD

“And those who heard it said, ‘Who then can be saved?’”

Luke 18:16

1. Many were astonished by what the Lord Jesus had just uttered.

2. It was a common belief that having wealth was a special blessing from God.

3. Many thus assumed that the wealthy would be able to enter into God’s kingdom easily.

4. This was wrong understanding that needed to be corrected!

ENTERING INTO THE KINGDOM OF GOD

“But He said, ‘The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.’”

Luke 18:17

1. Entering into the kingdom of God.

a. This requires understanding of God’s grace.
b. It also requires faith on the part of the individual.

2. Impossible with men:

a. To enter into the kingdom of God on human merit.
b. To give up riches easily.

3. Possible with God

a. God will give grace.
b. Faith and understanding will also be given.
c. God can enable any individual to enter His kingdom by His grace and power.
