THE PARABLE OF THE UNJUST STEWARD II

“So he called every one of his master’s debtors to him, and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ And he said, ‘A hundred measures of oil.’ So he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ So he said, ‘A hundred measures of wheat.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ So the master commended the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light.”

Luke 16:5-8

1. The Parable of the Unjust Steward continues

a. The steward called the debtors of his master.
b. Two were singled out for mention
i. A debtor who owed 100 measures of oil.
ii. Another debtor who owed 100 measures of wheat.
c. To the first debtor:
i. The debt is reduced to 50 measures of oil.
ii. This was a discount of 50%.
iii. This was a sizeable discount!
d. To the second debtor:
i. The debt is reduced to 80 measures of wheat.
ii. This was a discount of 20%.
iii. Any discount would be appreciated by the debtor.

2. The master in this parable

a. Of course, he would come to know what his former steward had done.
b. All he needed to do was to check his accounts carefully.

3. He commended his dishonest steward

a. The steward remained dismissed.
b. But the master was able to appreciate his shrewdness.
c. It does not mean that he approved of the dealings of his former steward.

4. The Comment of the Lord Jesus

“For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light.”

Luke 16:8b

a. The Lord Jesus was not commending the unjust steward either.
b. He commented on “the sons of this world”.
i. They showed that they were prudent (shrewd).
ii. They were able to understand money matters well.
c. He also commented on “the sons of light”.
i. In comparison, the sons of light were less prudent.
ii. They do not show a better understanding concerning monetary matters.
