Text: Luke 12: 25-28

FURTHER ENCOURAGEMENT

1. The Lord Jesus sought to encourage those who came to Him,

a. They were anxious about many mundane matters:
i. Money matters.
ii. Basic provisions for life (food and clothing).
b. But worrying resolved nothing at all.
i. The challenge was to learn how to trust God.
ii. God values us even more than we realise.

DEALING WITH THE PROBLEM OF ANXIETY

“And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? If you then are not able to do the least, why are you anxious for the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. If then God so clothes the grass, which today is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith?”

Luke 12:25-28

1. Worrying is a useless activity.

a. If we are bothered by our physical stature.
b. Worrying is not going to make us any taller.

2. Powerless

a. If we are unable to do the least.
b. Why be anxious about all the other things we have no control over?

3. The lilies of the field.

a. They grow beautifully.
b. But they do not toil and spin.
c. The glory of Solomon (e.g. “his wealth”).
i. He would array himself with beautiful clothes.
ii. But he could not compare with the natural glory of the flowers in the field.

4. God cares for:

a. The birds of the air.
b. The lilies of the field.
c. Even the grass.
i. It grows for a while.
ii. It is soon cut down.

5. God cares for us even more deeply.

a. God cares.
b. He will take care of us (“clothe us”).

6. Our problem is highlighted:

a. We have but “a little faith”.
b. Because our faith is small, we tend to be anxious about many things.
c. Let us seek to cultivate our faith very much more.
