我夜间的歌曲《路加福音》
Text: Luke 12: 13-15
THE PROBLEM OF COVETOUSNESS
1. Covetousness is a common problem.
2. However, it is also a hidden problem.
3. The Lord Jesus had to address this challenge in one of His teaching sessions.
TEACHING THE CROWDS
“Then one from the crowd said to Him, ‘Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.’ But He said to him, ‘Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?’ And He said to them, ‘Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.’”
Luke 12:13-15
1. One of the people among the crowd asked the Lord Jesus for help.
a. It was a problem between two brothers.
b. It involved a family inheritance.
i. One brother was not satisfied with his portion of the inheritance.
ii. He may have felt he deserved more.
iii. He asked the Lord Jesus to speak to his brother about giving him more.
2. The reply of the Lord Jesus:
a. He did not come:
i. As a Judge.
ii. Or as an arbitrator.
b. He refused to be involved in this family dispute.
3. A hidden problem addressed.
a. This problem was “covetousness”.
b. The Lord would be able to know if the heart is covetous.
c. If it is, then there is danger afoot.
4. What is Life all about?
a. To many, life is to amass “an abundance of material possessions”.
b. Many pursue wealth as if it is the most important thing in life to acquire.
c. As a result of this focus, important issues are not looked into:
i. Faith in God.
ii. Salvation and eternal life.
iii. Living a righteous life on earth.
d. Thus, the Lord Jesus warned the crowd about covetousness.
