My Song In The Night (Gospel of Luke)
我夜间的歌曲《路加福音》
Text: Luke 1:57-66
REJOICING WITH ELIZABETH
1. The birth of a son to Elizabeth was well-celebrated
a. By Elizabeth and Zacharias, naturally.
b. By their relatives.
c. By their neighbours (Luke 1:58).
2. The focus of their joy
a. The Lord’s great mercy.
b. In giving the old couple, Zacharias and Elizabeth, a son.
CIRCUMCISION AND THE NAMING OF THE SON
1. The ancient rite of Circumcision
a. This was given by God to Abraham.
b. This was the sign that would mark the nation as God’s covenant people.
c. This was done on the 8th day of the life of the baby boy (Genesis 17:10-14).
2. Naming of the son
a. A suggested name was “Zacharias”. The new-born baby would be named in honour of his father (Luke 1:59).
b. Elizabeth objected. The name of her son was to be called “John”
(Luke 1:60).
c. All who were there were surprised by Elizabeth’s choice.
i. No one in the family was called “John”.
ii. This name was given by the angel Gabriel (Meaning: “Graced by God”) {Luke 1:13}.
iii. But it was not customary to give him a name that was not in the family lineage.
d. They signalled to Zacharias and asked for his choice of a name.
i. He asked for a writing tablet.
ii. He could not speak but he could write.
iii. He wrote, “His name is John!” (Luke 1:63)
He remembered what the angel Gabriel had said (Luke 1:13).
iv. Everyone marvelled!
ANOTHER MIRACLE
The moment Zacharias made his choice known:
1. His mouth was opened. Luke 1:64a
2. His tongue was loosed. Luke 1:64b
3. He spoke, praising God. Luke 1:64c
The period of chastisement was over!
THE NEWS SPREAD
1. Fear came upon all (Luke 1:65).
2. All had heard Elizabeth and Zacharias naming their son “John”.
3. They wondered:
“What kind of child will this be?” (Luke 1:66a).
