MEDITATION
Genesis 34:18-19
18 And their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son.
19 So the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he delighted in Jacob’s daughter. He was more honourable than all the household of his father.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. The original offer by Hamor
a. A dowry.
b. A gift.
c. Whatever Jacob would request from Hamor and Shechem (Genesis 34:12).
2. Response of Hamor and Shechem
a. Hamor and Shechem liked what they heard from the sons of Jacob.
b. Shechem was happy to comply.
c. He was ready to meet this condition stipulated by the sons of Jacob.
3. Jacob’s silence
a. He was not consulted:
i. Not by his sons.
ii. Not by Hamor and Shechem.
b. He was just brushed aside as it were.
4. An important comment about Shechem
a. He was described as “honourable”.
b. He was “more honourable than all the household of his father”.
i. What he did to Dinah was disgraceful.
ii. But he did want to do something to “atone” for his misdeed.
iii. He wanted to marry Dinah so the she need not live in shame.
