MEDITATION
Genesis 31:36-37
36 Then Jacob was angry and rebuked Laban, and Jacob answered and said to Laban: “What is my trespass? What is my sin, that you have so hotly pursued me?
37 Although you have searched all my things, what part of your household things have you found? Set it here before my brethren and your brethren, that they may judge between us both!
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. An angry rebuke
a. This was directed towards Laban.
b. Jacob was angry and he rebuked his father-in-law.
2. Rhetorical questions
a. What was Jacob’s sin or trespass?
i. The words “sin” and “trespass” were used for emphasis.
ii. Sin and trespass would simply be “wrongdoing”.
b. Jacob was confident that he had not done wrong to his father-in-law.
i. He had not stolen anything from Laban.
ii. Why had Laban pursued him so intently as if he was a criminal?
3. A word of challenge
a. Laban had searched all the tents thoroughly.
b. There were five separate tents that had been thoroughly searched.
i. Jacob’s own personal tent.
ii. The four tents of his four wives.
c. What had Laban actually found?
i. He could show everyone the things that had been stolen from Laban.
ii. There were two groups there; Laban’s and Jacob’s.
Jacob had been treated as if he was a criminal. This was humiliating and frustrating.
