MEDITATION
Genesis 30:37-40
37 Now Jacob took for himself rods of green poplar and of the almond and chestnut trees, peeled white strips in them, and exposed the white which was in the rods.
38 And the rods which he had peeled, he set before the flocks in the gutters, in the watering troughs where the flocks came to drink, so that they should conceive when they came to drink.
39 So the flocks conceived before the rods, and the flocks brought forth streaked, speckled, and spotted.
40 Then Jacob separated the lambs, and made the flocks face toward the streaked and all the brown in the flock of Laban; but he put his own flocks by themselves and did not put them with Laban’s flock.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Jacob’s attempt to influence the birthing of speckled offspring
a. Jacob knew that his own flock was very small.
b. He wanted somehow to cause the ewes to give birth to speckled lambs.
2. The idea behind this plan
a. This attempt was to be made in the mating season.
b. If the ewes were to gaze at speckled plants:
i. Green poplar
ii. Almond and chestnut tree
c. This would cause them to produce speckled offspring.
d. This idea seemed to have worked.
i. There is no scientific evidence to prove that this method actually worked.
ii. This was simply Jacob’s idea of securing a significant flock for himself.
3. God’s grace and power
a. God may not have been mentioned.
b. But the generation of life actually comes from the LORD.
c. He had promised Jacob that He would protect and provide.
d. God blessed Jacob and thus his ewes produced many speckled offspring.
The LORD knew that Laban had been taking advantage of Jacob all this while.
