Text: Genesis 30: 9-11
MEDITATION
Genesis 30:9-11
9 When Leah saw that she had stopped bearing, she took Zilpah her maid and gave her to Jacob as wife.
10 And Leah’s maid Zilpah bore Jacob a son.
11 Then Leah said, “A troop comes!” So she called his name Gad.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Leah’s response
a. She knew what Rachel was doing.
b. She refused to be outdone.
c. She already had four sons but determined to add more sons.
2. Leah’s maid, Zilpah
a. Leah realized that she had stopped giving birth.
b. She did what Rachel had done.
c. Zilpah, her maid, was given as the fourth wife of Jacob.
3. Zilpah’s son
a. She bore a son for Jacob.
b. This child was brought to Leah for naming.
4. Leah’s name for the new son
a. She called him “Gad”.
b. She felt that she now had a troop.
c. She had four sons on her own (Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah).
d. Zilpah’s son, Gad, was regarded as Leah’s.
THE GROWING FAMILY OF JACOB
1. In normal circumstances, to have so many sons would be cause for great rejoicing.
2. In these circumstances, the mood in the family was tense and full of rivalry.
