MEDITATION
Genesis 30:1-2
1 Now when Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister, and said to Jacob, “Give me children, or else I die!”
2 And Jacob’s anger was aroused against Rachel, and he said, “Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?”
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Rachel’s dilemma
a. She had Jacob’s love and attention.
b. But she had no children of her own.
c. She envied Leah who had already borne four children for Jacob.
2. A Family quarrel
a. Rachel complains and demands to have children.
b. To carry on without being able to bear children was terrible.
c. Death seemed to be a better option than barrenness.
3. Jacob’s anger
a. No matter how much he loved Rachel he was upset with her reasoning.
b. Jacob was not God! He could not give her the children she desired.
c. This was a frustrating moment.
THE FAMILY OF JACOB AT A GLANCE
1. Jacob appeared to be doing well
He served his father-in-law, Laban.
2. He had two official wives
Leah and Rachel
3. He had four children already
(Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah)
4. A growing problem
Leah and Rachel did not get along well. Jacob began to have family difficulties with Rachel.
