Text: Genesis 29: 7-8
MEDITATION
Genesis 29:7-8
7 Then he said, “Look, it is still high day; it is not time for the cattle to be gathered together. Water the sheep, and go and feed them.”
8 But they said, “We cannot until all the flocks are gathered together, and they have rolled the stone from the well’s mouth; then we water the sheep.”
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Jacob’s suggestion
a. The phrase “high day”
i. The day was still young, probably before noon.
ii. There were many hours yet before the sunset.
b. Suggestion given to the people attending the cattle and the sheep
i. Why not water the sheep?
ii. They could then take the sheep out for pasture.
iii. Meanwhile, the cattle could be gathered together.
iv. They would have their turn to be given water.
v. This seemed to Jacob, a better use of time then to sit around.
2. The response of the people of Haran
a. They could not do what Jacob suggested.
b. They were governed by their local custom (practice).
c. The prevailing practice:
i. All the flocks of sheep must be gathered together first.
ii. Then would the stone covering the mouth of the well be removed.
iii. The stone may have been large and a good number of people needed to remove it.
iv. Then the sheep would be given the water.
Jacob had much to learn about the customs and practices of the land of Haran.
