MEDITATION
Genesis 26:34-35
34 When Esau was forty years old, he took as wives Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite.
35 And they were a grief of mind to Isaac and Rebekah.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Isaac
a. He was married at 40 years of age (Genesis 25:20).
b. He was 60 when Esau and Jacob were born (Genesis 25:26).
2. Esau
a. He also married at 40 years of age.
b. But he took a different route:
i. He married two women.
ii. Both wives were Hittites.
3. Isaac
a. He would be 100 years of age at this point of time.
b. He was grieved that Esau, his beloved first-born had married two Hittite women.
4. Rebekah
a. She shared the same grief as Isaac.
b. Obviously, Esau had not consulted with his parents when he married them.
c. This was a departure from the normal practice of parental involvement in marriage planning.
d. Isaac and Rebekah were discerning enough to know the problems that lay ahead for Esau when he married the two Hittite women. They would influence the children that would come from their union. The Hittites did not share the same faith. They were idolatrous.
5. Jacob
He was unmarried at forty years of age.
