MEDITATION
Genesis 16:5-6
5 Then Sarai said to Abram, “My wrong be upon you! I gave my maid into your embrace; and when she saw that she had conceived, I became despised in her eyes. The LORD judge between you and me.”
6 So Abram said to Sarai, “Indeed your maid is in your hand; do to her as you please.” And when Sarai dealt harshly with her, she fled from her presence.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. A severe quarrel between Sarai and Abram
a. This was virtually inevitable.
b. Sarai brought her problem to Abram.
2. The strong words of Sarai
a. My wrong be upon you!
i. Sarai now realized her mistake, her “wrong” in giving Hagar to be Abram’s wife.
ii. But Abram was not right either. He could have said “No” to Sarai.
b. She complained that she was being despised by Hagar.
c. Invoking the LORD’S name:
i. This expressed the depth of anger Sarai felt.
ii. She was asking for “justice” from Abram as the head of the household.
3. The response of Abram
a. He gave permission to Sarai to treat Hagar as her maid and not as the second wife.
b. This was a weak and wrong response of Abram.
4. Sarah’s treatment of Hagar
a. He treated Hagar harshly.
b. Hagar fled from their home in despair and fear!
