Text: Exodus 32: 1
MEDITATION
Exodus 32:1
Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Moses was “delayed” coming down from the mountain
a. God had called Moses to meet with Him in the mountain.
b. He was giving him all the plans for the building of the Tabernacle.
c. Of course, this would take time to understand all that God had said.
2. The word “delayed”
a. Was there an actual delay?
b. Was it not more of the impatience and intolerance of the people?
3. The people gathered themselves to Aaron
a. Aaron was the brother of Moses.
b. He had been with Moses right from the start.
c. They felt that they should speak to him about what they felt.
4. Their suggestion to Aaron
a. They wanted to “make gods”.
b. Questions that they should have asked themselves honestly:
i. How does one make a god?
ii. The people wanted to make “gods!”
iii. They were referring to idols that they were familiar with in Egypt.
c. This sounded more than just a suggestion!
5. They showed contempt for Moses
a. Their words were cold and rude
“For as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt…”
Exodus 32:1
i. They had forgotten what Moses had done for them.
ii. His role as leader was dismissed with no regard at all.
b. They expressed doubt as to what had happened to him.
i. They were not expressing concern.
ii. They were quite callous!
