"Hear now what the LORD says"

Text: Micah 6:1

USING THE IMAGERY OF A LEGAL COURT

Micah employed the imagery of a legal court room to illustrate the just cause of the Lord God.

“Hear now what the LORD says:
‘Arise, plead your case before the mountains,
And let the hills hear your voice.'”
Micah 6:1

1. “Hear now what the LORD says”

a) This was an open word to all in Israel.
b) This was an open invitation to anyone and everyone in the land.
i) The rulers
ii) The wise
iii) The scholars
iv) The rich
v) The poor
vi) The common people

2. “Arise, plead your case”

a) Anyone is allowed to take up a case against the Lord.
b) He can charge God with anything he believes is a just cause.
i) Had God been unfaithful?
ii) Had God not fulfilled His word?
iii) Had God failed in any way?

3. “Before the mountains… the hills”

a) These have been in existence from the very beginning.
b) These were silent witnesses.
c) They would be able to verify the complaints or charges made against the Lord.

4. “Hear your voice”

a) The mountains and the hills would hear any just complaint against the Lord.
b) They would be the impartial witnesses.

SILENCE

As may be expected, there was absolute silence from the land. The inhabitants of the land knew too well that they had no just complaint to lay before the Lord God! If there had been anyone unfaithful, it would be the people themselves. They had failed to fulfil their part in the Covenant between God and Israel.
