“Knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts.” 2 Peter 3:3

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE DOCTRINE OF HELL

How should we fathom the teaching on the subject of hell, as Jesus taught it. Let us consider the following thoughts:-

1. Contrast is being offered vividly

a) Between “life” and “hell”

“It is better for you to enter into life maimed,
rather than having two hands, to go to hell,
into the fire that shall never be quenched-“
MARK 9:43

“It is better for you to enter life lame,
rather than having two feet, to be cast into hell.”
MARK 9:45

b) Between the “kingdom of God” and “hell fire”

“It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye,
rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire-“
MARK 9:47

2. Consciousness of the doctrine of hell

a) Jesus wanted to alert the consciousness of His disciples to the reality of hell.
b) He used this doctrine to help all to be mindful of being judged by God one day.

3. Call to be careful of sins that can debar us from heaven

a) It could be through any normal means.
This is the meaning behind the reference to the “hand, foot, eye”. These members of the body are “normal” body parts of every human being.
b) Beware the power of sin

Sin can cause a person to lose out on the opportunity God gives to man, to receive an eternal inheritance in heaven!

FEW DOCTRINES ARE SO VITAL AS THIS TEACHING ON “HELL”

Everyone needs to be concerned about the doctrine of “hell”. It should become so real and vital to us, that it affects the way we live! Israel in the days of Jesus focused more on “daily living” than to concentrate on the subject of heaven.

Jesus sought to correct this widespread and common belief held by many! A proper understanding of the doctrine of hell need not cause us to live in terror. Well understood, it can provide tremendous impetus for ministry in the heart of every believer.
