Day 209 – Mark 9

“While they promised them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption…” 2 Peter 2:19a

HEATED DISCUSSION

While the Disciples did not dare to ask Jesus to elaborate on the subject of His personal suffering, nevertheless, they knew that there would come a time when their Teacher would die. Whatever their reasons were, they found themselves talking about the subject of “greatness”. This subject so occupied their time, that Jesus had to ask them pointedly this question.

“What was it you disputed among yourselves on the road?”
MARK 9:33

STUDIED AVOIDANCE

The Disciples must have sensed Jesus’ consternation. They tried to avoid the topic.

“But they kept silent, for on the road they had disputed
among themselves who would be the greatest.”
MARK 9:34

What prompted this discussion?

The following may be suggested:-

a) The question of “succession” may have prompted this discussion.
If Jesus was indeed going to die, who would be appointed to lead? The Master had not spoken on the subject of leadership much.
b) The question of “success”
i) All the Disciples could speak of having had some success in ministry.
ii) Some may have more leadership inclinations than others.
iii) Some were already singled out for special instruction (Peter, James, John).
c) Personal ego
This cannot be dismissed completely. The Disciples were still undergoing training, and they were capable of having high personal ambitions. The “flesh” still remained strong in the hearts of the Disciples.
d) The way of the world
The world’s way of thinking was to consider “personal greatness”. The Disciples were not entirely free from the influence of the world.
e) Guilty silence
The silence of the Disciples, when confronted by Jesus, merely confirmed why Jesus had to make subtle changes in His ministry plans. He must devote more time with His Disciples, and teach them even more vital spiritual lessons.
