Day 196 – Mark 9

“…and will utterly perish in their own corruption.” 2 Peter 2:12b

GREAT SENSE OF FEAR

The Disciples did not know how to respond to what they had just experienced! Peter, true to his nature, blurted out the following words.

“‘Rabbi, it is good for us to be here;
and let us make three tabernacles:
one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah’-
because he did not know what to say,
for they were greatly afraid.”
MARK 9:5-6

1. “It is good for us to be here”

This was probably the only statement that Peter correctly made. It was indeed a good and wonderful experience for the three privileged Disciples.

2. “Let us make three tabernacles”

What did Peter have in mind when he said these words?

a) Was it out of concern for Jesus, Moses and Elijah?
b) Did he think that they would be staying in the mountain for a greater length of time?

3. Speaking out of turn

Mark noted that Peter spoke out of turn. He did not really know what he was saying. The sense of awe and fear was deep and powerful that it made Peter say things that he should not have.

THE VOICE OF GOD

The following text is most significant. The three Disciples would hear the very voice of God!

“And a cloud came and overshadowed them;
and a voice came out of the cloud, saying,
‘This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!’
Suddenly, when they had looked around, they saw no one anymore,
but only Jesus with themselves.”
MARK 9:7-8

1. “This is My beloved Son”

The Disciples would never doubt the identity of Jesus ever again. He was not just “Rabbi” (Mark 9:5). He was the Beloved Son of God!

2. “Hear Him”

Had the Disciples been hearing Jesus only as a Rabbi? They must pay even closer attention to Jesus as none other than the Beloved Son of God. What a humbling, life-transforming experience these Disciples must have had.
