Day 194 – Mark 8

“Whereas angels, who are greater in power and might, do not bring a reviling accusation against them before the Lord.” 2 Peter 2:11

OVERCOMING THE FEAR OF SUFFERING AND DEATH

One of the major problems that the Disciples struggled with was the idea of suffering and dying; in particular, the thought of Jesus having to suffer much and then dying. That thought was virtually impossible to comprehend.

Jesus sought to teach His Disciples to overcome their very limited comprehension of suffering and death. He pointed them to the greater reality of eternity associated with Him (Cf. Mark 8:34-38).

ENCOURAGING WORDS OF COMFORT

In order to encourage His Disciples further, Jesus went on to make the following statement.

“And He said to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you
that there are some standing here who will not taste death
till they see the kingdom of God present with power.'”
MARK 9:1

1. The Power of the Lord Jesus

This was surely well displayed already! Let us consider the following texts.

a) The Authority of Jesus displayed the power of God (Cf. Mark 1:22, 27)
b) The power to even forgive sins (Cf. Mark 2:10)
c) Ability to give power and authority to His disciples (Cf. Mark 3:15)
d) Power to perform endless miracles (Cf. Mark 6:53-56)

Many more texts may be adduced to demonstrate the great power that Jesus possessed! Yet, one sad fact remained. Not even the Disciples seemed to be able to fully comprehend the meaning and the significance of the kingdom of God.

2. The power of the kingdom of God

Jesus understood the struggles of His Disciples, hence He gave them a strong word of assurance. This word (Mark 9:1) was especially uttered to boost the trust and confidence of the Disciples concerning the reality of the kingdom Jesus had preached.

a) They would see the Kingdom of God present with power.
b) They need not fear suffering and death at any time.
c) They may look forward to being fully assured in their hearts of the reality of the kingdom of God.
