Day 85 – Mark 4

“Let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it.”
1 Peter 3:11

WHY WASN’T THERE ANY QUERY?

Let us take time to read what Mark wrote concerning the parable of The Sower. And as we read this parable, we must ask ourselves why only the disciples of Jesus asked Him to explain the parable. Did the parable of The Sower seem too simple for the multitude?

“Behold, a sower went out to sow.
And it happened, as he sowed, that some seed fell
by the wayside; and the birds of the air came and devoured it.
Some fell on stony ground, where it did not have much earth;
and immediately it sprang up because it has no depth of earth.
But when the sun was up it was scorched, and because
it had no root it withered away.
And some seed fell among thorns; and the thorns grew up
and choked it, and it yielded no crop.
But other seed fell on good ground and yielded a crop
that sprang up, increased and produced; some thirtyfold,
some sixtyfold, and some a hundred. And He said to them,
‘He who has ears to hear, let him hear.'”
MARK 4:3-9

1. How long would it take Jesus to tell this parable?

Even if Jesus were to tell this parable, slowly, and with great dramatic effects, He would not have taken more than 10 minutes!

2. What Jesus said was nothing out of the ordinary

That is certainly true! Jesus did not say anything that seemed outstanding at all. All that He had observed in His parable were things that were common place home truths!

3. What if Jesus had ceased teaching after telling this parable?

Jesus concluded this parable with this statement.

“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
MARK 4:9

4. Possible thoughts of the multitude:-

a) Disappointment that Jesus spoke so simply.
b) Upset that there were no great nuggets of spiritual gold to bring home.
c) Misgiving that Parables were all that Jesus had to offer.
d) There did not seem to have been any appreciation of the teachings of Jesus at all.
