COMPACT SHORT PARABLES

Jesus was a master of short parables, as well as long ones. The following is an example of short parables. They are also rich and full of meaning.

“And He said,
‘The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed
on the ground, and should sleep by night and rise by day,
and the seed should sprout and grow,
he himself does not know how.
For the earth yields crops by itself: first the blade,
then the head, after that the full grain in the head.
But when the grain ripens, immediately he puts in the sickle,
because the harvest has come.'”
MARK 4:26-29

1. Some thing are not fully comprehended

The actual growth process may not be fully fathomed by the farmer. His responsibility is not in the realm of biology.

2. Some things may be accepted as “natural”

a) The work of sowing.
b) The work of growing.

3. Some things are predictably climactic

a) Harvest will take place at the appropriate time.
b) Sickles would be used for harvesting.

4. The intended lessons which are meant to be understood

a) The sowing aspect (the word of God).
b) The growth aspect.
c) The harvesting aspect.

PARABLES ARE STILL RELEVANT TO US TODAY

The focus on “harvesting” must not be missed at all! The clever lessons Jesus developed must of course be appreciated. But what is of utmost importance is the fact that we are responsible for “harvest time”. Let us seek to “be ready” all the time!
