“For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps.” 1 Peter 2:21

ANOTHER BARBED ATTACK OF THE SCRIBES

Once again the scribes attacked Jesus. These particular scribes came from Jerusalem, and were thus thought to be very highly trained in religious matters. They made a snide remark against Jesus.

“And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said,
‘He has Beelzebub,’ and, ‘By the ruler of the demons
He casts out demons’.”
MARK 3:22

1. The scribes

a) There were scribes who lived in Capernaum (Cf. Mark 2:6).
b) There were also scribes who came from Jerusalem (Cf. Mark 3:22)

2. Held in high esteem

a) The scribes, in general, were held in high esteem.
(These scribes were probably trained locally.)
b) The scribes from Jerusalem were generally held in higher esteem.
(They most likely received their training at the holy city itself.)

3. The accusation of the scribes

a) Verbal attacks like this one did not require the scribes to prove anything.
b) The crux of the accusation amounted to an accusation that the power Jesus wielded came from demonic forces… perhaps from one of the rulers of the evil spirits.

4. A two-pronged attack

a) First there was the concerted effort of Jesus family to seize Him from ministering to the multitudes.
b) Then came the verbal attack- an accusation that Jesus could be in league with demons.

5. The uninformed and weak-minded

a) Doubts could form in their minds.
b) The ministry of Jesus could be adversely hampered.
