THE GREAT COMMISSION

Rebuke was not the final word that Jesus gave to His disciples. Rebuke was given when it was necessary. Rebuke was only the means to a great goal. He wanted His disciples to fulfill “The Great Commission”.

“And He said to them,
‘Go into all the world and preach the Gospel
to every creature.”
MARK 16:15

The more complete version of The Great Commission is found in the Gospel of Matthew.

“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying,
‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth,
go therefore and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all
things that I have commanded you;
and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen”
MATTHEW 28:18-20

1. The scope of the Great Commission

a) The earlier Commission (Cf. Mark 6:7-13)
This Commission was limited in two ways:-
i) With reference to scope
It was essentially limited to ministry to Israel.
ii) With reference to time
It was a very temporary ministry!
b) The new Great Commission
The Disciples were to attempt to reach “all the world”! All “creatures” would be a reference to all mankind.

2. The Content of the message to be proclaimed

What would be the essential contents of the Gospel?

a) It would centre on the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) The meaning of His life and death must be highlighted.
c) The Resurrection of the Lord Jesus must also be proclaimed!
