Day 345 – Mark 16

“So that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them.” Acts 5:15

THE LARGE STONE

The women did not have a solution to their problem of who would move the stone away from the mouth of the cave! They remembered the size of the stone that covered the mouth of the cave.

When the women disciples arrived at the garden tomb, they were in for the surprise of their life!

“But when they looked up, they saw that the stone
had been rolled away- for it was very large.”
MARK 16:4

The women had been perplexed as they thought about the removal of the stone. They knew the size of the stone- that “it was very large”.

A NEW PROBLEM

The new problem completely replaced the old worry! The large stone “had been rolled away”. All kind of wild thoughts must have flooded their minds there and then!

1. Had someone/some people stolen the body of Jesus?

This was Mary Magdalene’s worry. She said these words to some people she assumed were the gardeners.

“But Mary stood outside the tomb weeping,
and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb…

She said to them, ‘They have taken away my Lord,
and I do not know where they have laid Him.'”
JOHN 20:11, 13

2. A stranger in the tomb of Jesus

The women followers took courage and entered into tomb of Jesus.

“And entering into the tomb, they saw a young man
clothed in a long white robe sitting at the right side;
and they were alarmed.”
MARK 16:5

a) They had no idea who this “young man” was
He could not have been one of the disciples of Jesus, for he would have been recognized immediately. Who was this man?
b) They had no idea what he was doing in the tomb of Jesus
i) It was not normal to find a stranger in a tomb.
ii) The early morning hour made his presence even more distressing.
iii) Not finding the body of Jesus in the tomb raised the alarm of the women!
