THE FAITHFUL WOMEN FOLLOWERS

Mark paid high tribute to the women followers of Jesus. His observation of the presence of the women followers was made in obvious contrast to the absence of the men disciples!

“There were also women looking on from afar,
among whom were Mary Magdalene,
Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses and Salome,
who also followed Him and ministered to Him
when He was in Galilee, and many other women
who came up with Him to Jerusalem.”
MARK 15:40-41

1. Naming of some women

Mark could not name all of the women followers! That would have been too long a list to include in his short Gospel. Hence, only a representative few were named.

2. All the way from Galilee

Many of the original Twelve came from Galilee. By far, Jesus had the most productive ministry in this region.

a) The men had traveled with Jesus all the way to Jerusalem.
b) The women disciples did no less; they traveled from Galilee to Jerusalem as well.

3. Following Jesus

It is arguably more difficult for the womenfolk to follow Jesus than the men! Two reasons may be cited:-

a) Social custom would have made it very difficult to literally follow Jesus.
b) Home duties would have prevented many from following Jesus.

But these women followers defied and overcame all odds! They loved the Lord Jesus and they would not be deterred by anything to follow Him.

4. Ministered to Him

What were the special contributions of these women followers? Mark noted that they “ministered to Him”. These women had more than proven that they were the equal of the men, with reference to faith, love and devotion.

a) They must have been the ones who looked after the mundane chores of life.
b) They must have given Him all the practical support needed (Cf. Luke 8:2-3).
