“The kings of the earth took their stand, and the rulers were gathered together against the LORD and against His Christ.” Acts 4:26
THE DEATH OF JESUS
Jesus died without a trace of defeat! He died as One who had accomplished what His Father had given Him to do. Mark noted the death of Jesus quietly with this simple statement.
“And Jesus cried out with a loud voice,
and breathed His last.”
MARK 15:37 (CF. JOHN 19:30)
POWERFUL SIGNS
God gave mighty signs that could not be ignored! First, there was that terrible darkness that hung over the land for a full three hours (Cf. Mark 15:33). Many must have been frightened by this darkness that refused to lift!
Another sign God gave was noted in the following text.
“Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.”
MARK 15:38
1. The veil of the temple
The veil of the temple played an important role in the Temple ministry.
a) It separated the holy place from the holy of holies.
b) The holy of holies could not be entered into but by the high priest, and that once a year.
c) That temple veil was now torn, from top to bottom, rendering it useless!
2. The significance of the veil
a) The intact veil showed that access to God was a great privilege
Man did not have “easy access” to God! He would have to go through the intermediary of the high priest.
b) The torn veil signified that access was now available- through Jesus!
ACCESS TO GOD
The apostle Paul wrote and explained more about our access to God in the following text.
“Through whom (Jesus) also we have access by faith
into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope
of the glory of God.”
ROMANS 5:2
Christ’s death on the cross had been accepted by God. All barriers and restrictions had now been removed. Through faith in Christ, access to God was made possible.
