Day 323

Day 323 – Mark 15

“Let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God has raised from the dead; by Him this man stands here before you whole.” Acts 4:10

NO LIMITS?

Imagine a whole garrison gathered for the purpose of mocking their prisoner Jesus! One obtained a robe of purple. Another made a crown of thorns. A third led the chorus, shouting “Hail, King of the Jews”. Were there no limits to such cruelty? The soldiers had not quite finished with their sport for the day!

“Then they struck Him on the head with a reed
and spat on Him, and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him.
And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him,
put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.”
MARK 15:19-20

1. Struck him on the head with a reed

What was all that about? How much fun could these Roman bullies derive from beating a person who was already half-dead after scourging?

2. Spat on Him

Spitting was one of the worst ways of expressing utter contempt!

3. Bowing the kneeâ?¦ worshiped Him

Had the soldiers heard that Jesus thought Himself to be the Son of God? Did He
think that He deserved worship? They would bow the knee in mock worship!

4. Mocked Him

Mocking a person brought a different kind of pain. Wounds to the emotions are no less painful! Two lines of mockery may be outlined:-

a) Mockery of Jesus as King
A king was supposed to have power! But Jesus seemed utterly powerless as the burly soldiers mocked Him at will.
b) Mockery of Jesus as Deity
A Deity was supposed to be feared for His Being was supposed to be Divine. The soldiers did not think Jesus Divine in any way! They had mocked Him with words of worship. Would not a true Deity have vented His anger on such sacrilegious expressions perpetrated by the Roman soldiers?

THE DIGNIFIED SILENCE OF JESUS

We are reminded of what Isaiah wrote about the silence of Jesus.

“He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He opened not His mouth…”
ISAIAH 53:7
