“For Moses truly said to the fathers, ‘The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren.” Acts 3:22a
THE ULTIMATE QUESTION
The high priest was desperate for some kind of a reply from Jesus! No matter how corrupt the council had become, there was something that had not been breached yet. The defendant must be allowed to speak for himself. The shrewd high priest then asked the ultimate question.
“Again the high priest asked Him saying to Him,
‘Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?'”
MARK 14:61B
Surely Jesus could not keep quiet on this issue. If He kept quiet, He would have denied the truth. But if he answered in the affirmative, the high priest would then have every reason to charge him with blasphemy.
THE ULTIMATE ANSWER
Jesus did not maintain silence for no reason! As long as there were spurious allegations made against Him, there was no need to make a reply. However, where truth concerning His identity was involved, He was obliged to answer.
“Jesus said, ‘I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting
at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds
of heaven.'”
MARK 14:62
1. I am!
Jesus’ answer must have brought glee to the heart of the high priest. He must have thought that he had Jesus where he wanted Him. But he had failed to comprehend the significance of Jesus’ statement. What if He really was The Christ? (And He was)!
2. The eschatological Son of Man
Jesus went beyond giving a simple answer to the question of the high priest. He spoke of Himself as the eschatological Son of Man!
a) Sitting at the right hand of Power
This described Jesus as the Christ, in His rightful place of honour and power with God!
b) Coming with the clouds of heaven
This described Jesus as returning to earth one day to establish His kingdom!
DANIEL’S VISION OF THE SON OF MAN
Jesus had in mind the prophecy of Daniel, when He spoke as He did.
“And behold, One like the Son of Man
Coming with the clouds of heaven!
He came to the Ancient of Days…”
