“And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.”
Acts 3:10b

THE ENEMIES OF JESUS

They tried every means possible to entrap Jesus but failed miserably. Their list of failures includes the following:-

1. Accused Jesus of blasphemy when He declared forgiveness of sin. Mark 2:5-7

2. Caustic criticism of Jesus’ Disciples for not fasting. Mark 2:18

3. Accusation of Jesus and His disciples for breaking the Sabbath. Mark 2:24

4. Insinuation that Jesus was in league with Beelzebub. Mark 3:22

5. Demanding that Jesus gave signs. Mark 8:11

6. Questioning the authority of Jesus. Mark 11:28

7. Traps laid out for Jesus:-

a) Question of paying unpopular taxes to Rome Mark 12:13ff
(Raised by the Pharisees and Herodians)
b) Question of the Doctrine of Resurrection Mark 12:18ff
(Raised by the Saduccees)
c) Question of the “first commandment” Mark 12:28
(Raised by a scribe)
Every plot had failed! The enemies were getting exasperated and desperate, especially after Jesus cleansed the Temple and drove out all the vendors.

BATTLING THE ENEMIES

Jesus was not one who backed away from attacks! Publicly, He spoke against the scribes, the Pharisees, the chief priests and the Herodians.

1. He humbled them, showing up their ignorance of the Scriptures. Mark 12:26-27

2. He rebuked them for their adherence to man-made traditions. Mark 7:1-8

3. He rounded on them for having rejected the Word of God. Mark 7:9-13

4. He exposed their hypocrisy with great courage. Mark 7:6-7; 12:38-40
