Day 257

The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord "Acts 2:20"

HAVE YOU NOT EVEN READ THIS SCRIPTURE?

The chief priests and scribes prided themselves as the keepers of their religious traditions. They took people to task if they did not keep the Sabbath laws. They were sticklers when it came to the tradition of the elders. People feared them for their seeming knowledge of the Scriptures.

Jesus exploded the myths that surrounded the chief priests and scribes. These were the people who were supposed to have devoted themselves to the study of the Scriptures. Surely they had read this portion of the Scriptures!

The text that Jesus cited was taken from the same one that had the word “Hosanna” (Cf. Psalm 118:22-26).

THE REJECTED STONE

Jesus spoke of Himself. He knew that the chief priests and scribes had essentially rejected Him in every sense of the word.

a) They rejected His teachings.
b) They found fault with His healing ministry.
c) They would not consider Him as the Messiah of God.

The rejection was thorough and complete. In their mind, their rejection was the end of the story.

THE CHIEF CORNERSTONE

However, Jesus differed! Man’s rejection was not final. The key issue was the Lord’s approval and blessing. In Jesus’ view, He was the chosen “chief cornerstone”.

1. In the New Covenant Jesus would be that chief cornerstone.
2. This was well within the will of God.
3. Through eyes of faith, people would exclaim “It is marvelous in our sight”.

THE ISSUE OF FAITH

Ultimately, it boils down to the issue of faith.
1. Was there faith in the Scriptures in the first place?
2. Was there faith in God at all?
3. Was there faith in Jesus of Nazareth as the chief cornerstone?
