Day 238 – Mark 11

“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.” 2 Peter 3:18

CAREFULLY LAID PLANS

There is no question that Jesus had made prior arrangements with the owner of the colt. Jesus had other disciples, who would be more than happy to grant His every request.

There is every reason to believe that the prophecy in Zechariah was being fulfilled before the very eyes of the careful disciple!

CONCERNING THE COLT

The following observations may be made concerning the colt that Jesus would ride on:-

1. Mark’s notation

Let us ponder again the following text.

“…you will find a colt tied, on which no one has sat.”
MARK 11:2

This colt has never had a rider. This gift truly honoured Jesus. One does not give anything but the best to a King. The owner must have had the highest regard for Jesus.

2. Zechariah’s notation

Zechariah added tender and important details.

“Lowly and riding on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.”
ZECHARIAH 9:9

It will take a very gentle person to ride upon a colt that has not been broken in. It usually takes quite a while before a colt is broken in, and is then fit for use. But Jesus would not have any difficulties at all. He who could calm the stormy sea, would have no difficulty riding on an unbroken colt of a donkey.

GREAT SYMBOLIC SIGNIFICANCE

The choice was clear. God could have given a powerful horse (Cf. Alexander and his mighty warhorse Bucephalus) for Jesus, but then this symbol would not communicate the right message. The symbol of the donkey had its own message to communicate to Israel.

1. He who rides on a donkey is humble (lowly; Solomon rode on a mule in his coronation procession; 1 Kings 1:33, 44).

2. He who rides upon the colt of a donkey is gentle.

3. He who does all that prophecy demands fulfills the Word of the Lord.

4. Jesus, in carefully and consciously fulfilling this prophetic word confirmed His identity.
