Day 227 – Mark 10

“Both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.” 2 Peter 3:10c

A SHORT DISCUSSION ON THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD

In order to help the earnest inquirer to see his shortcomings, Jesus broached the subject of the Commandments of God.

“You know the commandments:
‘Do not commit adultery’, ‘Do not murder’,
‘Do not steal’, ‘Do not bear false witness’,
‘Do not defraud’, ‘Honour your father and mother.'”
MARK 10:19

What was the original significance of God giving His commandments to Israel? The following thoughts may be highlighted:-

1. To regulate society

2. To inspire people to become noble human beings

3. To prevent criminal and sinful actions

4. To cultivate the human being

5. To help man realize that as a mere sinful mortal, he can never keep all of God’s commandments fully!

A SURPRISING ANSWER

The earnest inquirer swiftly responded with these words.

“And he answered and said to Him,
‘Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth.'”
MARK 10:20

1. A youthful answer

Only a youthful person could come up with such a swift response. Those who are older and more mature could never have spoken in this manner.

2. An open-faced answer

This inquirer spoke openly and honestly. As far as he could see, from his personal perspective, he had been pretty good. He had indeed kept these commandments “from youth”.

3. Innocence of Youth

Innocence does not mean sin-free, nor does it mean guilt-free. It simply means that in his innocent way of looking at God, life, sin etc. he feels that he has done well enough to “inherit eternal life”. All he desired was a word of confirmation from the famous “Good Teacher” that he was truly good enough in God’s sight to inherit eternal life!
