"The way of Cain..."

Text: Jude 11

THREE COMPARISONS

Jude was most critical of the false teachers and their ways. In the following text, Jude used three comparisons to highlight the wicked ways of those who held aberrant doctrines.

“Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain,
have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit,
and perished in the rebellion of Korah.”

Jude 11

1. “They have gone in the way of Cain”

a) What was the way of Cain? (Genesis 4).
b) Features that may be noted: –
i) Careless worship
ii) Dark hatred of a brother
iii) Murder of a brother
iv) Unrepentant

2. “Have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit”

a) What is the error of Balaam (Numbers 22-24)?
b) Features that may be noted: –
i) He was a renegade prophet.
ii) His main concern was to make profit as a prophet.
iii) He sold his services to anyone who would pay him well.
iv) He proved himself a false and wicked prophet.
v) The false teachers in Jude’s day showed themselves to be most avaricious.

3. “And perished in the rebellion of Korah”

a) Who was Korah (Numbers 16)?
b) Features that may be noted: –
i) Insubordination.
ii) Rebellion against the express commandments of God.
iii) Arrogantly they demanded the rights of the priests.
iv) They were unrepentant to the very end.
v) They were influenced by worldly secular ways.
