"God saw their works"

Text: Jonah 3:10

THE MERCY OF GOD

The Lord God noted all that the king of Nineveh and his subjects did when they listened to the message Jonah preached.

“Then God saw their works, that they turned from
their evil way; and God relented from the disaster
that He had said He would bring upon them,
and He did not do it.”
Jonah 3:10

1. “Then God saw their works”

a) Of course, it means that God saw their hearts as well.
b) Their works reflected the repentance they felt in their hearts.
c) Their repentance was genuine.

2. “That they turned from their evil way”

a) They had turned from their violence.
b) They had listened and they had obeyed.
c) They had fasted and sought God to turn away from His fierce anger.
d) They had displayed appropriate humility.
e) God accepted their repentance.

3.”And God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them”

a) Jonah’s message was a word of warning.
b) If Nineveh had not responded appropriately then doom would have befallen.
c) But Nineveh had humbly repented from their wicked ways.
d) That generation would be spared.
e) God relented from performing the disaster that He had threatened.

4. “And He did not do it”

a) It was God’s prerogative
i) To warn.
ii) To bring judgment.
iii) To pardon.
iv) To withhold punishment.
b) God does not delight in man’s destruction! He would rather forgive and pardon if man repented!
