"These sayings of Mine..."

Text: Matthew 7:24

LAYING A FOUNDATION

The Lord Jesus Christ came to bring about a glorious salvation! Sadly, many do not understand God’s plan of redemption, and end up with rejection. But just as sadly, those who say that they believe in the Lord Jesus Christ do not give time to lay a strong foundation for their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ!

“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them,
I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:
and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew
and beat on that house; and it did not fall,
for it was founded on the rock.”
Matthew 7:24-25

1. “These sayings of Mine”

a) The immediate context is a reference to the word of God that Jesus taught (Matthew 5-7).
b) However the phrase “Sayings of Mine” would refer to all that Jesus taught.

2. “And does them”

a) The teachings of Jesus are to be heard and accepted.
b) But there is another aspect that must be given full attention: they were meant to be practised!

3. “I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock”

a) The sayings of Jesus were compared to a foundation of bedrock.
b) The foundation is of critical importance to the house.

4. The storms of life

a) The rain and the floods.
b) The severe winds.
c) These will test the strength of the foundation of the house.
d) If the foundations are strong, no storm of life could ever destroy it.

ANOTHER PARABLE

Jesus gave another parable that was meant to offer a strong contrast!

1. It was a parable of a foolish man who built his house upon sand.

2. When a storm came up the house of the foolish man was utterly destroyed.

3. The reason why the house was destroyed was because of the lack of a solid foundation!

THE LESSON MUST NOT BE LOST

The need to build a strong foundation is obvious! That foundation is to be found in the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. But it was the same Jesus who uttered the words “It is written!” It is vital that we are challenged to build a strong foundation. Let us determine to check the foundations of our faith! Do we know what Jesus taught? Have we sought to put into practice what He said?
