"Another generation arose after them who did not know the LORD..."

Text: Judges 2:10

A SAD HISTORY

It is with deep sadness that we read in the Scriptures that Israel did not do too well in obeying the Lord and in the keeping of the Sinaitic covenant. The following texts tell a sad story of rebellion against the Lord.

“So the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua,
and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua,
who had seen all the great works of the LORD
which He had done for Israel.”

“When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers,
another generation arose after them who did not know the LORD
nor the work which He had done for Israel.”
Judges 2:7, 10

1. “Joshua”

a) Joshua had been by the side of Moses throughout the wilderness journey.
b) He had forty years of fellowship and ministry with Moses.
c) He helped Israel to settle down in Canaan.
d) Many battles were fought for years before they could settle down in the Promised Land.

2. “The elders who outlived Joshua”

a) They too had seen the great works of the Lord.
b) Thus they sought to be faithful to Him.
c) They did all they could to ensure that Israel would keep their covenant with God.

3. “Another generation”

a) Inevitably another generation will arise.
b) But this new generation did not know the Lord.
c) Nor had they seen His mighty works.

FORSAKING THE LORD

What happens when a nation sets aside the commandments of God? The following text is a solemn reminder of how badly things can turn out.

“Then the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD,
and served the Baals; and they forsook the LORD God of their fathers,
who had brought them out of the land of Egypt;
and they followed other gods from among the gods of the
people who were all around them, and they bowed down to them;
and they provoked the LORD to anger.”
Judges 2:11-12

The period of the Judges was one of the darkest times in the history of the children of Israel!
