"For you are a holy people to the LORD your God..."

Text: Deuteronomy 7:6

A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP ESTABLISHED

A very special relationship was established between Israel and the Lord God. The Ten Commandments of God represented the Covenant that God had with His people. The following text highlights this special relationship!

“For you are a holy people to the LORD your God;
the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself,
a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of this earth.

Therefore know that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God
who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations
with those who love Him and keep His commandments.

Therefore you shall keep the commandment, the statutes,
and the judgments which I command you today, to observe them.”
Deuteronomy 7:6, 9, 11

THE FOLLOWING TENETS MAY BE HIGHLIGHTED

1. Israel

a) A special people to the Lord.
b) Chosen to be a people for the Lord Himself.
c) A special treasure above all the peoples on the earth.

2. God

a) He is the LORD their God.
b) He is ever the faithful God.
c) He keeps covenant and mercy forever.
d) Especially with reference to those who love Him and keep His commandments.

3. The Laws of God

a) The commandment (reference to the Ten Commandments)
b) The statutes and judgments (These were explanations and application of the Law.)

4. Therefore you shall keep

a) This was the part that God’s people must fulfill.
b) Keeping the Lord’s word is not an option that can be set aside.

IN THE NEW COVENANT

This was made possible by the Lord Jesus Christ, only based on even greater promises from the LORD our God. Through faith in Christ, we become God’s children (John 1:12).

The same challenge to keep the Lord’s commandments exists in the New Covenant for God’s people. To all who love the Lord, His commandments are not burdensome at all (1 John 5:3).
