"For the transgressions of My people He was stricken"
Text: Isaiah 53:8
THE DEATH OF THE MESSIAH
The suffering of the Messiah ultimately led to His death. Both His suffering and death were prophesied.
“He was taken from prison and from judgment,
And who will declare His generation?
For He was cut off from the land of the living;
For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.”
Isaiah 53:8
1. “He was taken from prison and from judgment”
a) The Messiah was arrested by the religious authorities (John 18:12).
i) He was first brought before Annas (John 18:13a).
ii) He was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the presiding high priest
(John 18:13b).
iii) He was then brought before Caiaphas (John 18:19).
b) He was then brought before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor (John 18:28).
c) After interrogation, Pilate found no fault in the Lord Jesus (John 18:38).
d) But Pilate yielded to the pressure of the Jews and the Lord Jesus was sentenced to death (John 19:1-16).
2. “And who will declare His generation?”
a) The Lord Jesus suffered great injustice.
b) No one was there to “declare His generation”.
c) No one stood up for Him at all.
d) His life was cut short drastically.
3. “For He was cut off from the land of the living”
a) The Messiah began His public ministry at 30 years of age (Luke 3:23).
b) He served magnificently for only a few short years.
c) Then He was “cut off from the land of the living”.
d) He died a terrible death, crucified on a cross.
4. “For the transgressions of My people He was stricken”
a) Why had God allowed the Messiah to suffer and die in this way?
b) The reason is stated plainly here.
i) It was for the transgressions of His people that He died.
ii) It was for Israel that the Messiah died.
iii) It was also for the transgressions of the world that the Lord Jesus died!
