"He was wounded for our transgressions"

Text: Isaiah 53:5

THE SUFFERING OF THE MESSIAH

The suffering of the Messiah was candidly described. The significance of His suffering should never be taken for granted!

“But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.”
Isaiah 53:5

1. Four words were used to describe the Messiah’s suffering:

a) Wounded

He was wounded.

b) Bruised

He was bruised.

c) Chastised

He bore chastisement.

d) Stripes endured

He was beaten with many stripes.

2. The Sufferings were painfully described in all the Gospels.

a) Matthew 26-27

b) Mark 14-15

c) Luke 22-23

d) John 18-19

3. The Penalty of Sin.

a) The ones who should have suffered are all who are sinful.

b) The sinful deserved to be punished for their sinful deeds.

c) All mankind is guilty of transgressions and iniquities.

4. The Vicarious Suffering of the Messiah.

a) The Messiah bore the penalty of all our sins, transgressions and iniquities.

b) He bore our chastisements for us.

c) Through His suffering, atonement for our sins was made.

d) Through His suffering, peace was made and given to those
who believed in the Messiah.

e) We are healed from all the spiritual damage caused by our many sins!
