"He is despised and rejected by men"

Text: Isaiah 53:3

AN UNEXPECTED PROPHECY

An unexpected prophecy was revealed. Few would be able to understand such a prophecy!

“He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.”
Isaiah 53:3

1. Astonishing features forewarned

a) The Messiah would be despised.

b) He would be rejected by people.

2. The New Testament Gospels

a) All the Gospels noted that the Lord Jesus was despised:

i) Because He was from Galilee.

ii) Because He grew up in Nazareth.

iii) Because He came from a humble family background.

iv) Because He did not have a great formal education.

b) He was thus rejected:

i) By the scribes and Pharisees.

ii) By the Jewish Sanhedrin Council.

iii) By those who did not understand His teachings.

3. Sorrow and Grief

a) The Messiah called Himself “The Son of Man”.

b) He identified with humanity fully.

c) He donned flesh and blood.

i) He understood sorrow.

ii) He felt grief.

iii) He was moved with deep compassion as He saw the sadness of many.

iv) So many were sick.

v) There were also some who were possessed by demons.

vi) He felt for all.

4. The sad reality

a) So many of the common people also despised Him.

b) They hid their faces from Him, disavowing Him.

c) They did not esteem Him as they should have.

d) Despite all that the Messiah had done, He was so badly regarded!
