"As for our Redeemer"

Text: Isaiah 47:4

THE MAJESTY OF GOD

The God of Israel was once revered by the nation. Israel had turned from the LORD and had worshipped idols. The deities that Israel worshipped were the idols of foreign nations. These idols had fanciful names and titles. Isaiah reiterated the fundamental titles that the LORD had. They were sufficient to establish His majesty.

“As for our Redeemer, the LORD of hosts is His name,
The Holy One of Israel.
Sit in silence, and go into darkness,
O daughter of the Chaldeans;
For you shall no longer be called
The Lady of Kingdoms.”
Isaiah 47:4-5

1. Three titles were highlighted:

a) The Redeemer

i) God was the Saviour of Israel.

ii) He had redeemed Israel from slavery under Egypt.

b) The LORD of hosts

i) The word “hosts” is a reference to God’s angelic army.

ii) He is the LORD who sits at the head of the heavenly army.

iii) There is no army that can defeat the “hosts of the LORD”.

c) The Holy One of Israel

i) An essential attribute of God is His “holiness”.

ii) His divine essence is one of holiness.

iii) The holiness of God is to be greatly respected.

d) Israel would have to relearn what it means to revere the LORD.

2. Addressing Babylon

a) The LORD addresses Babylon:

i) Authoritatively

ii) Firmly

b) Babylon is called “Daughter of the Chaldeans”.

i) She shall no longer wear this title, “The Lady of Kingdoms”.

ii) The Babylonian Kingdom would be destroyed.

iii) She would end up “sitting in the darkness”.

iv) She is to remain silent by the decree of the LORD of hosts.
