"Remember the former things"

Text: Isaiah 46:9

THE WISDOM OF REMEMBERING

Israel seemed to have forgotten so many things. They had forgotten their historic Covenant with God. They had forgotten all that God had done for them.

“Remember this, and show yourselves men;
Recall to mind, O you transgressors.
Remember the former things of old,
For I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like Me.”
Isaiah 46:8-9

1. “Remember”

a) This was a valid word of admonishment.

b) This was also a very necessary word of counsel.

c) How could Israel have forgotten all that God had done for the nation?

2. “Recall to mind”

a) God had redeemed Israel from Egypt.

b) He had given to them the land of Canaan.

c) He had been their Saviour and Redeemer.

3. The problem of Transgression.

a) Transgression had caused the heart to forget God.

b) They had forgotten what it meant to be “men of God!”

4. Remembering the former things of old.

a) The LORD had revealed Himself:

i) To the patriarchs.

ii) To the prophets.

iii) To the nation again and again.

b) They had never seen anyone comparable to God.

i) No idol could compare with the LORD.

ii) No hero could ever be measured against the LORD.

c) The former things.

i) They were recorded in their Scriptures.

ii) They were noted in their chronicles.

iii) If only Israel would pause and take time to remember
all that God had done for the nation!
