"Have you not known?"

Text: Isaiah 40:21

BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF GOD

Isaiah sought to bring Israel back to basic knowledge of God. The nation has no excuse for its ignorance of the LORD.

“Have you not known?
Have you not heard?
Has it not been told you from the beginning?
Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
It is He who sits above the circle of the earth,
And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers,
Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain,
And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.”
Isaiah 40:21-22

1. Four rhetorical questions raised.

a) Have you not known?

i) How was that possible?

ii) Children should have been taught basic knowledge of God.

b) Have you not heard?

i) The Temple priests should have proclaimed messages about God.

ii) The school teachers would have taught the history of Israel and
inside its history the works of God would have been made known.

c) Has it not been told you from the beginning?

i) Parents should have instructed their children.

ii) Family gatherings would have included prayer and praise.

iii) How could there be such ignorance about God?

d) Have you not understood from the foundation of the earth?

i) Israel’s teachers were supposed to have taught the children
about God as the Creator.

ii) There was a great lack of basic understanding about God.

iii) It should have been obvious that God laid the foundation of the earth.

2. Essential knowledge of God as the Creator.

a) God created the earth that was shaped like a circle (spherical).

b) He sits above all that He has created.

c) All the inhabitants are like grasshoppers before the LORD.

d) God in His greatness stretched the mighty heavens as a curtain.

e) He stretches the heaven out like a tent to dwell in.
